Transition is God's Way of Promotion

I knew in my heart at a young age that I was meant to do something else other than being trapped in a 9-5 job; doing the same things over and over again. While I have nothing against employment, I just felt that I wasn’t cut for it (just like not everyone’s for entrepreneurship). I finally had my shot with operating a brick-and-mortar business a few months ago and it started good. But as with any  business, the start up phase is always the hardest— many adjustments, trials and errors, “testing the water” among others.
My first supplier of goods overpriced me which already accounted for loss income-wise, there was a misunderstanding with my space’s contract which also cost me money, the sale was slow for a few weeks prior, i have no employee at the shop because the last one had to terminate her job with us due to unexpected family issues— all of these contributed to delays of bill payments and as of this writing, some unpaid ones. And yes, coupled with personal challenges that I wish not to share in this post.
For someone who was always enveloped from the harsh realities of life, this was my first taste of big time stress! Wherever I look, personal or career, it seems that nothing has gone my way (or at least what I expected them to be).
Instead of sulking and feeling sorry for myself, I turned to listening more to motivational podcasts and my current favorite is Terri Savelle Foy (Christian book author, conference speaker and success coach); seems that her messages spoke right through me. I heard her say and I quote:
Transition is God’s way of promotion.
According to dictionary.com; transition means “movement” or “passage”. Whatever ‘transition’ is in your current circumstance, it’s God’s way of promoting you and your life.It may not seem to be the best, it might even be painful in the beginning, trust that it’s there to teach you something valuable to better you and your life.
For me, it’s slapping me on the face that I need to get my horses together and gradually transition to being independent. I have always banked on my parents for everything, even after having Saehee (my daughter as a single mom), and now I realize that there’s more out there in the real world than just my overly-dependent self. I am at a point right now that I try not to ask anything from them anymore, not unless I really have to and I have no other choice. I know that they’re always willing to help, but I think that it’s time to lighten their load a bit after twenty eight long years of my dependency on them. It ain’t cool to be a leech, you know!
Also, this experience taught me to be more mindful of decisions and actions to take. I was an immature young lady who would make decisions out of emotion and most likely than not, I ended up regretting. What was even worse is that I wasn’t brave enough to face the consequences!
See, all these trials that I’m currently facing positioned me at my tipping point. It’s like God’s saying to me, “Wake up, Geline! It’s not what and where I want you to be. You are and you deserve more than that.”
Without these complications, I would not have worked on becoming the person that God wants me to be. There’s a motivational quote and I’m going to paraphrase it but the gist is that, “When you feel devastated, almost to a point of giving up, that’s when your miracle is about to happen.” So don’t give up! God is only preparing you for a higher position; He wants to make sure that you’re ready for the “job description”.

HairFood Co. in Iloilo City!

I got my first chemical treatment for the hair when I was 16 years old. I was exposed to beauty pageants around that time so part of my preparation was to get my hair easy to manage always. I would get calls for meetings and on-the-spot appearances on events making that decision to be viable; it would save time and money because I need not get my hair done by my makeup artist. I already know how to apply makeup on myself but I was not (still not) on point with doing my hair.

My hair wasn’t necessarily curly but it was wavy and frizzy before the first chemical treatment. My first chemical treatment for the hair was having it “relaxed”; it was the time when hair rebonding was non-existent. I remember having hair cellophane that had colors; and when rebonding was introduced to the market, I dived into it myself.  I would have a yearly hair rebond since then. Once you start, you can’t stop ‘ey?

However, as I aged, I realized that I should do something about it because too much chemical on the hair is making it ‘double dead’. Hair is made up of dead cells, ya know? One day I said to myself: “it’s either you stop having these chemical treatments or do something not to aggravate its condition, Geline”. Of course, I had to go for Option #2. Haha! :)

Lo and behold, HairFood Co. opened in Iloilo City last September 3!

Mom To Mom: Don't Be Afraid To Ask For Help

ask for help moms

Being a mom is one of the best things a woman can be blessed with; it’s momentous! Along with this high-flying experience comes the sleepless nights, exhaustion and overwhelming dramas. I see you nodding in there! To make it worse, most moms feel ashamed of getting help because of the supposed impression from other people of being “less of a mom” or lazy or she’s-not-cut-for-motherhood thing. I think it’s otherwise. Part of being a good mom (to say the least) is being able to take care of yourself; this will include your health & sanity! There should be a state of balance to achieve success in every thing, remember the yin yang?

Simply put, how can you take care of someone else when you can’t even take care of yourself ?  When you’re sick, unbalanced, unhappy and crazy?! I had to learn this the hard way.

We are human beings who get burned out and emotions play a big part of how we perceive things (the world, other people and our life in general)– whether we admit the latter or not. We all need that cup of coffee that we’re obsessed with, that good book to read, that beautiful and vibrant paint on the nails, those good times with girl friends to be able to see the good stuff this world has to offer. Although, ideally, we should always see the goodness no matter what our current circumstances are. But you get what I mean, right?
People around me are astonished (I’m also aware that some are not impressed at all. LOL) as to why I’m a mom to a young tot and yet I am able to go on business meetings, do my passions, have a cup of coffee with friends. Well, I love my kid so much that I know I need to keep my sanity to be able to function well and be there for her.
I have been blessed with wonderful parents and family who are always willing to help me out with taking care of Saehee. I assume that being a Filipino and especially living in the Philippines, I am fortunate to belong to a society where families are closely-knitted. We are large. Loud. Happy. Supportive.
It is apparent to me that in other countries, people pay other people per hour to take care of their kids while they’re at work or out for a segment of refreshment from life’s hustle and bustle. If you are fortunate like myself (doesn’t need to pay anyone for a few hours of their time so that I can do things that I have to do)grab the opportunity! You don’t know how many women all over the world who would “die” to be in our shoes!
Help can come from various sources and is not only limited to family members. If you have the extra fund to hire a good and trust-worthy nanny, I support it. You help your family get a balanced life and you also help the nanny to finance herself  and/or her family.  It’s a win-win situation. You can also ask help from your close & trusted friends; maybe you need to run an errand or be at a meeting of some sort, give it a shot! You can leave your child at their house or your friend goes to your house while you’re out and about. It depends on your agreement, you can always negotiate. I learned that in the US of A, this set up has become a popular one— why? It becomes a play date for the kids. There might be other ways of help that are available to you, go ahead and utilize it. Whatever works!
However, don’t be self-absorbed! Never forget to be always thankful and be willing to reciprocate the goodness of those people who help you. I make sure that I also help out in any way that I can–like helping my cousins do their home work, watch out for their kids when they need to do something and I also give tokens (if the finances permits, of course).
Don’t worry about what other people would think or say about it– chances are those people who think negatively of it are actually not parents! They have no idea what a handful it can be when you’re a parent.

Remember that it is your life that you’re living for yourself and you know what works out for you and your family. Chill out. Life is meant to be enjoyed at all times!

REVIEW: Avon Extra Lasting Makeup Remover

avon extra lasting makeup remover

It's been a while since I last used a makeup remover on my face. I only decided to go back to using it when my skin looked awful about few weeks ago. Kasi naman... kung hindi pa nagkaka-negative result. Haha! :) Since my mom is an Avon lady, I always get the privilege to try out their products. Most of the time, libre pa! Thanks, Mom! :) Soooooo imagine my delight when I was strolling the Avon shopping area and I saw this Extra Lasting Makeup Remover!

Before I jump into the review, I want to stress out the importance of removing makeup thoroughly because in my recent experience, soap and water just don't do the job. Sleeping with makeup on, even just a bit or remnants, can lead to acne breakouts, accelerate the skin ageing process and make it appear dull.

CLAIMS:
Unique formula gently and effectively removes all traces of makeup, including water proof. Opthalmologist-tested, suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

PACKAGING:
Comes in a convenient plastic tube making it portable.

SIZE:
75 ML. net

SCENT:
None

PRICE:
199 php (Selling Price)

WHERE I BOUGHT:
Avon Iloilo branch

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
Shake well. Saturate a tissue or cotton pad, close eyes and stroke over entire face, including lashes, lids and eyebrows. Gently wipe clean. Rinse off thoroughly with water.

WHAT I LIKE:
  • Its simple and portable packaging.
  • Removes waterproof makeup.
  • Doesn't sting my eye whenever I get the liquid on that area.
  • No scent. Scents can sometimes be annoying.
  • Readily available since there are lots of Avon ladies (and men) already.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:
  • It is oil-based and I have oily skin = do the math. I'm kind of bothered by the oily feeling upon application; yes, I know that I can wash it off since it's a makeup remover, still I don't like it.
  • I need at least three swipes with the cotton to thoroughly remove the makeup which means that I need to use more product. I would appreciate if it's less than that.
  • A bit pricey for its size.

MY RATING: 7/10

Have you tried the Avon Extra Lasting Makeup Remover

Mom Entrepreneur (Mompreneur) Yay or Nay?

Image: stocksnap.io

I’m both a hands-on mom and a hands-on entrepreneur.
And the thing is, I want to succeed in both areas.
I was one of those little girls who would say, “When I grow up, I want to be like my mommy”; yes, also, literally being a mom. And I wanted it while I’m still young. I fancied ‘growing up’ with my kids. Haha! True enough, God graciously granted my heart’s desire for I brought Saehee into this world when I was 24 years old. Though it wasn’t in a favorable circumstance ’cause I was unmarried and financially not prepared for her arrival. However, having her is still one of the greatest blessings that happened in my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Seeing your heart beat outside of your body is just priceless!

In between those moments, I also envisioned myself as a successful business woman (I wasn’t acquainted to the term ‘entrepreneur’ back then). I remember being asked in a beauty pageant that I joined years ago the classic “how do you see yourself 10 years from now?” ; and I clearly remember my answer, “I see myself as a business tycoon and providing jobs to people”. So far, I still have a few years remaining when I started to provide jobs to people. Not yet a tycoon, though, but getting there. Haha!
My goal is to be triumphant in both careers and I know that IT IS POSSIBLE.
Juggling through being a career mom entails good time management, sacrifices and [trying] to focus. A few weeks upon opening the shop, I had very little time spent with Saehee— I am at the shop from 11 AM to 8 PM or 9 PM tops and when I come home I would usually cut short our bonding time because I felt really exhausted and it’s her bed time. It’s a good thing that I managed to make Saehee stay with me at the shop sometimes and it’s wonderful that she gets to see (i also explain to her) how we earn the money; she likewise helps out with light work loads and if she gets bored or antsy, we have her books/coloring books/tab to shift her focus. I had to make changes with our arrangement so that there’s going to be a win-win [situation]. If you find yourself in a similar situation that I was, putting a few tweaks on your footing will yield you a favorable result.
Sacrifices. Hmmmmm.. where do I begin? Haha! Anyway, I was talking to my boyfriend way back and he was telling me that he will go to the cinema after we talk to watch Captain America: Civil War (he was in Poland); I told him, “Lucky you! There were a few movies passed that I wanted to watch in the cinema but I haven’t seen any of them until now”.  Also, I own a thrift shop that sells second-hand clothes from abroad but my closet is in its “loose” stage as of the moment. Haha! I give away unused/unwanted clothing every Christmas to some family members or charity but for this time frame, I wasn’t able to refill because my priority is to make the business work. I have to be extra mindful of my spending since I’m still on the process of figuring out things in this business.
If I’m in the shop or planning on how to make it forward, I try to be present in the moment. That means, I block myself from worrying about other things not related to the business. If I’m with Saehee, I try to give her as much of my undivided time and attention. I have to be honest that this is still the area that I need huge improvement on. Nevertheless, I do the best that I can to serve its purpose.
Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.
This is the time that I’m mostly exhausted but I feel happy. I know that I’m finally accomplishing something not just for my family but for my goals, as well. I mingle with people from different walks in life, I (finally!) am learning and imposing how to be smart with money (yey Geline! Haha!), I get to be more creative, I pursue my passion and most importantly, little by little, help people by providing them jobs.
Being a mompreneur (mom + entrepreneur) is challenging, I’ll give you that. But if deep in your being you know that it’s what you’re set to do, give it a shot! Age doesn’t matter. Ray Kroc founded McDonalds when he was 52; Mary Kay Ash started Mary Kay at age 45. Even your status in the society won’t matter— Henry Sy, from a sari-sari store vendor to the “shopping mall king” of Asia; Lucio Tan who owns Philippine Airlines, Fortune 300 Tobacco (among 300 other businesses) are some of my favorites who have rags-to-riches stories.
It all boils down to YOU— what is it that you want? What are your goals? Start from there (we all need to start somewhere, don’t we?) and work your way up.
Tara! Let’s go for our dreams!

Still BeautywithGeline

In the midst of challenges and responsibilities, we sometimes lose our true selves in the process. I know that I did. The Geline who always takes care of herself, in tune with what makes her truly happy; the ambitious, driven Geline.

If we've been friends here on FB from years back, you know that aside from being the sunny, quirky, optimistic Geline who's obsessed with business and personality development, I also have a knack for beauty. I love all things beautiful and I strive to have it in myself, in my life.

I am a self-confessed makeup junkie despite the opposition from some people believing that 'natural is beauty'; i have a counter for that--- natural is beauty but makeup is glam! Haha!
😂💄😂

That ridiculous dedication has led to beauty blogging, advising people about their concerns pertaining to beauty and skin care, being invited to events, receiving free stuff from companies, and getting paid! Sadly, I lost track of that side of me recently because of some circumstances.

In the end, I realized that denying your happiness is denying yourself. That's the worst thing that could happen to a person because it's going to eat you up inside. Your zeal for life fades away eventually and you'll feel monotonous in your daily living.

So do yourself a favor... whatever life throws at you, staying true to yourself should still be a priority. I know that being a mom can be time and energy zappers, but it can be done. I know that being a bread winner can consume yourself, but it can be done.

Diamonds are created out of intense heat and pressure, not from an easy-breezy process. So go ahead and shine bright like a diamond! 🤗
💎

P.S.
[Photo above] Me being true to myself now despite the swarm of setbacks. See what I mean? :)

Mayonnaise Hair Treatment

Straightening and coloring simultaneously tortures our hair, like a lot. I made this mistake and has been left with dry hair for years. *crying* I've tried salon treatments to revive my brittle hair and they were okay but it's not budget friendly. *crying again* That's when I started to look for cheaper alternatives and the more natural, the better.

In this age when spas and expensive treatments rule the hair care industry, mayonnaise hair treatment is not only inexpensive but natural and safe too. Mayonnaise contains oils, eggs and other ingredients that nourish the hair. If your goal is softer, shinier, smoother feeling hair then mayonnaise might be a good match for you. Besides, Cameron Diaz swears by this.

Credit: increddibleegg.org

How to make a Mayonnaise Hair Treatment:

1. Choose a regular, full-fat mayonnaise because it has all the ingredients that nourish your hair and make it soft plus silky. Avoid mayonnaise that contain extra flavoring of herbs and spices because it may do more harm than good to your hair. If you can, go for an all-natural, organic mayonnaise because this type typically contains olive oil. It's available in any grocery store.

2. Use approximately 1/2 cup of mayo, more or less depending on the length of your hair. Don't use more than needed because it might be difficult to wash it all out. Apply mayonnaise to freshly cleansed, damp hair as you would with any conditioner. Focus on the ends since it's the oldest part of the hair. Avoid the roots if you have thin or fine hair (like myself). You may want to use a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute the mayo onto your hair.

3. Let the mayo sit from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on how much conditioning your hair needs or how much time that you have. I like to leave it overnight and wash it the following morning. Use a shower cap or any plastic bag to cover your hair; this will trap your body heat against your head and help the mayonnaise to get its work done of deep conditioning your hair.

4. Remove the cover and rinse your hair with warm water and a gentle shampoo (I use a baby shampoo). If you feel that there's still some residue, you can cleanse again. Your hair should feel soft, not oily.

5. You can do this once a week or once a month. It all depends, again, on how much deep conditioning your hair needs.

No matter how healthy your hair is, we all need some timely caring and pampering for it.

Have you tried this Mayonnaise Hair Treatment? How is it for you?
